Welcome

Welcome

Welcome to Sunshine Sundews. The web site is now up and running. I'm in the process of uploading the initial store inventory and I'll be updating the inventory as more seed becomes available.

I'll be using this blog to pass on interesting Carnivorous Plant news I come across as well as news and information about Sunshine Sundews.

What is Sunshine Sundews?

Sunshine Sundews is being set up BY AND FOR carnivorous plant enthusiasts. Sunshine Sundews is a way to buy sell and swap seeds. We provide a range of plants that range in difficulty to suit beginners to advanced growers. We aren't a nursery, and we don't seek to compete with nurseries. Nurseries are configured to produce large quantities of plants and are definitely the place to go to if you are looking for live plants - especially the slower growing plants like Nepenthes.

Why Seeds?

Although Sunshine Sundews will sometimes list plants, the initial focus is seeds as they are cheap and simple to harvest, store and transport. Seeds are the source of almost the entire collection of stock plants at Sunshine Sundews. The only down side is the delay between germination and the time taken to become an adult plant. Depending on the species and growing conditions this can be anywhere from a couple of months to 5 or 6 years. Either way, watching a carnivorous plant develop from a seedling to maturity is an enjoyable experience in itself.

Seed is particularly good for Drosera collectors (aka Sundews - the namesake of this site). Drosera normally go from germination to flowering within a year and frequently produce large quantities of seed that have high germination rates. This means that collectors can maintain a large collection of plants in a small growing area by growing each species in rotation.

Philip ...
